Young Patients Enjoy Animal Therapy on National Pet Day

Young patients in Wolverhampton had the chance to meet some very special furry, scaly, and feathered friends in celebration of National Pet Day.

Stefan from The Animal Man Company, based in Wombourne, was invited onto the Children’s Ward at New Cross Hospital today.

A gecko, skunk, owl, bearded dragon, and snakes were some of the animals that brought smiles to patients and staff, offering an opportunity to interact with them up close.

Kirsty Lewis, Senior Matron for Acute Children’s Services at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said: “It’s been so lovely to have the animal man here this morning to celebrate National Pet Day.

“Being up close and personal with snakes, owls, skunks, and cockroaches has been a real treat.

“The children loved engaging with the animals, and it certainly provided some different entertainment on what can otherwise be a long and boring day on the children’s ward.”

The children enjoyed two engaging educational sessions, learning fun facts about the animals while getting the chance to handle some of them safely.

Pet therapy can offer many benefits, such as helping to reduce anxiety and improve emotional well-being for children.

Animals can provide comfort, companionship, and a sense of security, leading to decreased stress and increased happiness whilst in hospital.

Stefan said: “Thank you very much for inviting me to the Children’s Ward. It’s been beneficial seeing the happy faces, and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

The visit was organised by The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Charity, which plays a vital role in supporting the Trust’s vision to deliver exceptional care and enhance the health and well-being of local communities.

Amie Rogers, Fundraising and Lead Digital Engagement Officer for the RWT Charity said: “A huge thank you to Stefan from the Animal Man Company for supporting us in aid of National Pet Day.

“It was wonderful to see the children’s positive reactions and how much they enjoyed the experience. We look forward to organising more activities like this in the future.”
