Young fundraisers take on Snowdon challenge

Two Wolverhampton schoolboys are set to climb Mount Snowdon this week, raising funds for a haven for the loved ones of patients receiving care in the last days of life at New Cross Hospital

Archie and Joey Farrelly-Daly, have been inspired by the care and compassion shown by their mum Helen Farrelly-Daly, Senior Matron in Oncology and Haematology at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, and hospital staff, and wanted to do something meaningful to support families experiencing loss. Their climb will help fund improvements to a dedicated room to turn it into a space offering comfort and privacy to families during the most difficult of times.

The challenge will see them tackle Wales’ highest peak, standing at 1,085 metres, this Friday 29 May, with the aim of raising awareness and vital funds for Your RWTC – the Trust’s charity – which supports efforts to enhance patient and family experiences.

Archie, aged 8, said:

“I want to do the challenge to help people, like mummy at work. I’m a bit scared but really excited to raise money for the hospital.”

Joey, aged 12 said

“I’ve always wanted to complete a challenge like Snowdon, and it’s even more rewarding knowing I’m doing it to make a difference to people at mummy’s work.”

Your RWTC supports projects and initiatives that go beyond NHS funding, helping to provide additional facilities, equipment and environments that make a real difference to patients and their loved ones. The Trust’s Specialist Palliative Care Team offers individualised support to patients who are facing life-limiting illness, including those who are recognised to be in their last days of life. This encompasses managing any troublesome physical symptoms, such as pain and sickness, emotional support and SWAN care in the last days of life. The SWAN model of care is used throughout the hospital as a multi-disciplinary team approach to end of life and bereavement care. It stands for Signs, Words, Actions and Needs.

The team support patients and their loved ones by providing individualised, personalised care to patients and works in collaboration with SWAN champions, a dedicated group of staff, passionate about achieving high quality, end of life and bereavement care across the organisation.

Amanda Winwood, Charity Development Manager said

“Seeing young people like Archie and Joey take on such an incredible challenge is so inspiring.  Their determination to climb Snowdon shows a level of compassion and community spirit well beyond their years. We are immensely proud of them.”
