Adventure days help children build confidence and create memories

Children and young people living with long-term health conditions have been enjoying new experiences through a series of adventure days organised by The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT).

Living with conditions such as type 1 diabetes, epilepsy and respiratory illnesses can bring daily challenges and, at times, leave young people feeling isolated.

To help address this, Your RWT Charity, the registered charity for RWT, alongside Youth Worker Brian Rhodes, organised a trip to Go Ape in Cannock for ten children and young people receiving care from the Trust.

The day allowed families to come together, take on new challenges and enjoy an exciting day of adventure.

A further trip to Woodlands Adventure in Walsall is planned for later this month, giving even more children and families the opportunity to enjoy a day out together.

Brian Rhodes, Youth Worker for the Children and Young People’s Diabetes Team at RWT, said: “It is always a pleasure to organise these events and spend time with our families. We love seeing our children and young people enjoy incredible experiences together.

“Because type 1 diabetes requires constant management and vigilance, these activities provide a wonderful opportunity to build confidence, create lasting memories and develop a strong sense of belonging among others who truly understand what living with the condition is like.”

The experiences have been made possible thanks to the generosity of corporate partners and fundraisers, including Child First Residential, based in West Bromwich.

Baldish Kaur Tucker from Child First Residential said: “As a children’s home, we wanted to support children living with life-limiting illnesses by helping them enjoy a special day out and create happy memories.

“We believe every child deserves moments of joy, adventure and laughter, regardless of the challenges they face. We hope our contribution brings some happiness to these children and their families and inspires others to support them too.”

Amanda Winwood, Charity Development Manager, said: “While the NHS provides essential clinical care and support, experiences like our Adventure Days are only possible because of the generosity of local businesses, organisations and supporters.

“Their kindness helps us provide opportunities that go beyond medical care and make a real difference to the wellbeing of children, young people and their families.”
