Bilston baker steps into the ring to support local NHS charity

A Bilston baker is preparing to swap rolling pins for boxing gloves as he takes on a charity boxing challenge to raise funds for Your RWTC, the registered charity for The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

Dan Whitehouse, 35, who has worked at Matt the Bakers for 18 years, will step into the ring on 14 November after being inspired by his friend Spencer Cree, whose fundraising efforts have generated thousands of pounds for the Trust’s Neonatal Unit in memory of his son, Freddie.

Despite having no previous boxing experience, Dan has spent the last three months training four times a week at Evans Boxing, transforming both his fitness and confidence along the way. His hard work has already paid off, with Dan losing an impressive four stone as he prepares for fight night.

Dan said “Spencer has raised so much money for charity over the years and I wanted to help give something back. At first I wondered what I’d let myself in for, but I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m excited for the night now.”

Dan has received fantastic support throughout his fundraising journey from family, friends, colleagues and local businesses. Matt the Bakers has kindly sponsored the event, helping him raise even more. He has also sold 70 tickets and hopes to raise at least £500 for Your RWTC.

While the challenge has pushed him out of his comfort zone, Dan says the cause is what matters most.

“Win, lose or draw, it’s about giving something back and raising money that can help people.”

Amie Rogers, Fundraising and Lead Digital Engagement Officer for Your RWTC, said “A huge well done to Dan for taking on this challenge and to everyone who has supported him along the way.

“Community fundraising is vital to the work we do and it’s inspiring to see people like Dan step out of their comfort zone to help make a difference for local patients, families and staff. We’d also like to thank Matt the Bakers for sponsoring the event. We wish Dan the very best of luck and look forward to cheering him on.”

Your RWTC supports projects and initiatives that enhance the experiences of patients, families and staff across The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

The charity would like to thank Dan, Spencer, Matt the Bakers, and everyone supporting the boxing challenge for helping make a difference to local NHS patients and families.
