Netball tournament nets money for charity

A former patient and Nurse who suffered life-threatening injuries in a car crash has raised more than £2,000 for a Wolverhampton hospital.

Amber Sorsby, 28, raised £2,194 through a netball tournament to donate to West Park Hospital, part of The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT).

The donation recognises the care Amber received after spending 53 days in the unit following a traumatic brain injury sustained in a car accident involving a drunk driver in 2018.

A total of 15 teams entered the netball tournament, although heavy rain forced play to stop in the afternoon.

Amber said: “Unfortunately, the day got rained off, so we only managed to play the morning fixtures. However, it was still hugely supported, and we raised £2,194.

“I hold this tournament annually as a thank you to West Park after spending two months there as a patient in 2018.

“I organise the day myself with lots of support from Stafford District Netball, including help with team registrations, court bookings and arranging fixtures for both players and umpires.

“The day went really well, with many companies donating raffle prizes, including Verso Lounge, Liquor Tank, Trentham Monkey Forest and several local businesses in and around Stafford.

“I also want to thank Stafford Grammar School for providing the courts for us to play on.”

Amie Rogers, Fundraising and Lead Engagement Officer for Your RWTC, RWT’s charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Amber for her continued support and dedication to West Park Hospital. Fundraising efforts like this make a real difference to our patients and staff, and it is truly inspiring to see someone give back in such a meaningful way after their own recovery experience. The generosity shown by everyone who took part and donated is sincerely appreciated.”
