Summit joy for determined fundraisers
A day of torrential rain failed to dampen the team spirit of charity fundraisers determined to reach the summit of Mount Snowdown in their bid to boost a £100,000 appeal to create a dedicated relatives’ room at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital.

Climbers from The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, supported by Your RWTC, The Trust’s charity, have now raised more than £9,000 and hope a final push for donations will help them get to £10,000.
They want to create a dedicated calm and peaceful space for loved ones to take a break from the busy ward environment as they support relatives and friends through end-of-life care and took on their mountain challenge on Saturday 20 September, along with family and friends.
Dr Hannah Jennens, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, said: “We had a brilliant day despite the torrential rain!
“It didn’t really stop all day, but we dug deep and all 21 of us made it to the summit which was fantastic. At the top, the weather was challenging with wind, rain and even some hail thrown in the mix. The yellow weather warning for rain was very true; we were soaked through despite waterproofs.
“There was brilliant team spirit between us all for the day and we had a wonderful support crew from Jenny Jones Lead Bereavement Nurse and Polly Butler, Morturary Supervisor, from Swan Suite too. We’d also like to thank all of our supporters for their encouragement.“

The Specialist Palliative Care Team offers individualised support to patients who are facing life-limiting illness, including those who are recognised to be in their last days of life. This encompasses managing any troublesome physical symptoms, such as pain and sickness, emotional support and SWAN care in the last days of life. The SWAN model of care is used throughout the hospital as a multi-disciplinary team approach to end of life and bereavement care. It stands for Signs, Words, Actions and Needs.
The team support patients and their loved ones by providing individualised, personalised care to patients and works in collaboration with SWAN champions, a dedicated group of staff, passionate about achieving high quality, end of life and bereavement care across the organisation.
Amanda Winwood, Charity Development Manager, said: “We’re so proud of our climbers – particularly for showing such determination in those dreadful weather conditions.
“And the donations have been rising over the last few days too. There’s still time to donate so please visit their just giving page. This is such an important appeal because the right support for patients and families going through end-of-life care is vital.”
